Calvin’s 500th

Question: What should you do on Calvin’s 500th birthday?

Answer: First of all, eat. Secondly, study his influence. Third and fourth, read his biogaphy and have a public reading of the Institutes.

Those were the things we did last July 10. Upon inviting students for a celebration, we prepared a lovely cake for the occasion. And then masks were distributed to honor the person who has been influential in bringing confessional Christianity back to its use. Aside from the cake, we also had noodles.

Then, we had a short dicussion of the Calvinistic confessions like the three forms of unity: the Belgic Confession, the Heidelberg Catechism 9780830829217mand the Canons of Dordt. A summary of his theology enabled us to appreciate the over-arching notion of the sovereignty of God and his providence.

Finally, a public reading of the “Golden Book of the Christian Life.” It was heartening to be reminded of the Cross again. Oh yeah, before I forget, I am still reading his latest biography, John Calvin: A Pilgrim’s Life by Herman J. Selderhuis.
